Darning is the art of patching or repairing hand-knit items, breathing new life into our most cherished garments. It’s a wonderful way to bring sustainability to your wardrobe as we prepare for cooler weather. Rina will teach you how to use yarn and a large needle to create a mend that is as beautiful as it is functional. For knitters and confident beginners, emphasis will be placed on Swiss darning, which more closely mimics the look of knitted fabric. The more traditional woven darning technique will also be demonstrated.
Please bring a hand-knit item in need of repair to learn with. Storebought knits can also be used for the class as long as they are made with thicker yarn in a hand-knit style. If you want to learn darning but don’t have an item that needs repair, you can knit a swatch and cut a hole in it. We will provide scrap yarn and a needle for you to take home as you work on your first darning project. Yarn color can’t be guaranteed, so if you want the repair to match the original item, you’re invited to use your 10% class supply discount to choose your own yarn.
This class is designed for beginners who have never done darning before. You also do not need to know how to knit, though knitters may get more out of the class.
Limited to 6 participants. Requires 3 participants to run. In the event of cancellation due to low enrollment, registered participants will receive notice and a refund 3 days prior to the scheduled start date of the series.
