Gansey Sweater Knit-a-Long

About This Class

Ages: 16+ Level: Intermediate. Skills needed include: the knit and purl stitch, casting on and casting off, knitting in the round, simple increases and decreases, and reading a pattern and knitting chart. We provide: Expert guidance and camaraderie throughout the month as you learn the techniques of Gansey knitting and then develop your own unique version of this still popular historical sweater design. You bring: A copy of Knitting Ganseys: Techniques and Patterns for Traditional Sweaters by Beth Brown-Reinsel, a Vermont knitwear designer; one skein of Plymouth Select Worsted Merino Superwash for your mini sampler; needles and notions according to the pattern instructions. We advise waiting until you have completed your mini sweater before choosing the yarn for your full-sized sweater. Participants receive 15% off supplies purchased at Notion. This 6-week KAL will take us on a journey through historical knitting, by first making a mini and then full-sized version of the traditional Gansey fisherman sweater. We will learn and execute the essential design elements and techniques of a Gansey by knitting a mini version (perfect for a doll). Once we have completed our mini sweaters, we will begin work on a full-sized version of a gansey of your own choosing. Notion operates on Western Abenaki land. I agree to exercise appropriate care when participating and to refrain from participating if I am taking medication or am under the influence of any substances with any tendency to affect negatively my motor skills or level of care and attention.
